2007년에 첫 출발한 오픈스페이스 배(이하 ‘배') 레지던스 프로그램 ‘오픈 투 유-Open to You’는 2008년 까지 한국에서 활동하고 있는 작가에게 작업공간의 제공과 작가간의 소통의 기회의 제공을 목적으로 매년 6개월간 부산 외곽에 위치한 일광산 숲속이라는 아주 독특한 환경속에서 진행되었다. 전국의 작가를 대상으로한 공모를 통해 선정된 참여 작가는 현대의 그것에 비해 열악하지만 부산 미술의 역사와 대안적 움직임의 흔적을 가진 열악한 작업장과 그것이 위치한 자연속에서 창작과 소통을 이루어낸바있다. 박윤희, 허수빈, 박용선 등 그간의 참여한 작가는 그들이 속한 위치를 기반으로 현재까지 개인대 개인만이 아닌 작가로서의 끈끈한 유대관계를 통해 프로그램이 종료한 지금까지도 상호 소통하는 기대이상의 결과로 우리에게 새로운 가능성과 목표를 주었다.

2008년 후반기에는 국제 레지던스 프로그램으로 변화를 꽤하였다. 독일 출신으로 유럽을 바탕으로 활동하던 그레고리 마스, 한국 출신으로 프랑스 및 유럽에서 작업하던 김나영, 그리고 부산에서 이미 왕성한 활동을 하고 있던 정혜련, 정윤선 작가를 대상으로 국제적 소통을 실험하였다.

우리에게는 이러한 실험이 큰 모험이었고 또 모험에 따른 다른 긍정적 가능성을 발견한 터라 2009년 하나의 민간 예술단체에 불과한 이곳이 국제 레지던스 프로그램(Openspace Bae International artist-in-residence program Open to You)로 변신을 하게된다. 민간이라는 한계, 즉 자본과 인력의 부족을 노력과 신념으로 극복할 수 있다는 순진한 생각이 실행으로 옮겨지는 시기였기도 하다.

2009년을 기점으로 국제 프로그램으로 변화한 ‘오픈 투 유’는 작가에게 창작활동의 제공이라는 레지던스 프로그램의 일반적 기능보다 프로그램의 제공을 통한 작가 및 지역간의 소통의 기회제공이라는 배만의 기능에 좀 더 무게중심을 두었다. 한국, 스위스, 마카오, 캐나다, 중국 등에서 모인 작가로 구성된 이 해의 프로그램을 통해 국제 레지던스 프로그램을 운영하는데 어려움도 알게되었지만 다른 한편으로는 국제적으로 장기적 소통가능성을 확인한 해이기도 하다. 그러한 결과로 마카오의 대표적 비영리 공간인 ox warehouse와 국제 교류 프로그램을 시행하는 등의 가시적 성과로 좀 더 의욕적인 모습을 가질 수 있었다.

2010년의 프로그램은 2009의 보완선상에서 출발하였다. 너무 많은 지역, 국가의 작가를 영입함에서 배운것 혹은 반성을 통해 소통의 다양성 확보를 새로운 기준으로 심사를 진행하였다. 그래서 퍼포먼스, 공간운영자, 기획자 또 한국에 많이 알려지지 않은 나라의 작가(몽골, 인도 등)를 영입하는 변화을 시도하였다. 그러한 시도는 작가의 다양성 측면에서 그리고 다양한 정보의 제공이라는 측면, 가장 중요한 배를 통해서 세계와 연결할 수 있는 거점을 혹은 외국의 공간이 배를 통해서 한국에 접근 할 수 있는 계기를 만들었다는데 있다.

배의 레지던스 프로그램은 좋은 작가를 프로모션 하거나 혹은 좋은 작품을 대중에게 공유하는 것도 중요하지만 작가의 가능성과 그 작가들이 앞으로 활약 할 수 있는 영역, 나아가 지속적인 프로모션 가능한 작가에게 무게를 두고 있다. 운용에 있어서 공공기금이 큰 부분을 차지함으로 가시적 성과를 외면할 수 없지만 진정성을 확보하려는 노력을 잊지 않으려고 한다.

2011 오픈 투 유는 총 30여 명의 국내외 작가가 응모하였다. 1차 심사는 4월 25일 김만석(미술평론가), 김성연(작가/ 대안공간 반디 디렉터)가 심사하였다. 심사의 공정성을 위해 배의 운영진은 심사에 의견 개진을 할 수 없었고 단지 심사 자료를 제공하는 정도로 참여하였다. 2차 심사는 1차에 선정된 5명을 대상으로 황석권(월간미술기자),허수빈(2008년 기 입주작가)김대홍(프로그램 디렉터)가 배에서 1박2일 일정의 워크숍 형식의 인터뷰로 진행되었다. 1명이 기권한 상황에서 총 3명이 참여한 심사를 통해 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 전희경 (회화), 인진미(영화), 대구의 하원식(영상)작가가 최종 선택되었다. 국외 작가는 사회개입을 기법으로 대중과 소통하며 참여형 작업을 지향하는 마르쿠즈 베른리 사이토 (스위스), 유럽을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 국제작가 그룹 ‘JAK’(안드레아스 가이셀 하르트(독일), 케스투티스 세비르넬리스(리투아니아),정장영(독일거주 한국), 연계공간인 대만의 국립대만 관뚜미술관의 추천작가, 마카오의 옥스웨어 하우스의 작가 가 최종 참여 결정이 이루어졌다.

심사는 배의 프로그램 특성에 대한 이해도와 활동계획서의 구체성 그리고 작업의 성향과 배의 운영목적과의 관계를 기준으로 이루어졌다. 전국에 수시로 나오는 많은 공모에 참여하기 위해 형식적으로 작성된 활동계획서는 심사에 있어서 부정적 요소로 작용하였고 배의 프로그램에 대한 이해도 즉 소통과 현장성을 포함시킨 경우는 그 반대로 긍정적 요소로 작용하였다. 예를 들어 구체적 타당성이 없이 막역히 ‘몇 월에 개인전을 계획 중' 혹은 너무 개인적 작품 생산 활동만을 강조 한 서류에 대해서는 취지와 부합하기 힘들었기 때문이었다.
어떤 작가는 모호한 기준인 월에 몇 일 정도 체류하면 되는 정도의 생각과 다른 레지던시와 중복 참여의 가능성을 가지고 있는 작가도 있었다. 이러한 상황들은 배가 지향하는 프로그램과는 시작점부터 괴리가 있음으로 배제되었다.

또 작업의 개념이 참신하고 또 실제로 추진 하였을때 흥미로운 결과를 낼 수 있는 작가의 계획서를 만날 수 도 있었다. 그러나 배가 원하는 장기적 소통에 어떠한 결과로 나타날지에 대한 혹은 꼭 배에서만 가능한 것인지에 대한 확신을 하지 못하였기에 최종 선정에 들지 못한 것을 아쉽게 생각한다.

오픈 투 유는 계속 진화 중이며 또 실험 중이다. 크나큰 유행처럼 전국 곳곳 다양한 단체가 운영하는 레지던스 프로그램이 생겨나고 또 사라지는 시점에서 단지 작가의 다른 목적을 위한 경력의 수단으로 이용되지 않기 위해 계획된 수 많은 세부 프로그램이 작가와 지역에 정말 도움이 될지는 의문이고 또 형식적 개선도 필요하지만 분명한 것은 자기반성을 게을리 하지 않는 프로그램이 되도록 노력하고 있다는 것이다.

누군가 ‘오픈 투 유’가 너무 높아 보이고 혹은 환경이 너무 힘들어 보인다고 했다. 우리는 이렇게 대답하고 싶다. 많은 작업 보다는 그냥 몇 달간 동료들과 여기 배 밭에서 쉬고 가라고, 설레이는 만남에 한 번 긴장해 보라고 말이다.

"Open to You!", the residency program of Open Space Bae, had provided Korean artists with studios and opportunities to communicate with other artists from 2007 to 2008. This program was provided 6 months residency in the unique space where located in Ilgwang mountain in the suburbs of Busan. It was great pleasure to witness the warm spirit of comradeship between the first 3 participants, Park Yoonhee, Heo Soobin, and Park Yongseon along with their great accomplishment despite of poor environment.
Bae opened its door to the world in 2008. Gregory Maas from Germany and Kim Nayoung from Korea those who were active in Europe participated in the program. Two Busan-based artists Jeong Hyeryun, Jeong Yoonseon joined them in order to share the artistic vision which went beyond nationality. This trial was a big adventure for us but we found the positive effect through it. As a result we decided to broaden Bae's operations into overseas in the second half of 2009. We dreamed that we can overcome our lack of financial and human resources through our passion and our effort and 2009 was the high time that our dream came true.
Since then, "Open to you!" has put emphasis on providing the opportunities to participate in various programs and interact with the local artists and audience rather than to provide a facility. The list included the artists from Korea, Switzerland, Macao, Canada, China, Taiwan and Japan. We got to know the difficulties in running international residency program of the second half of 2009. The experience was worthwhile in the result that we found the vision for the long-term partnerships. Bae made a contract for an exchange program with Ox warehouse, the representative alternative space of Macau.
2010 program was intended to supplement the 2009 program that was inadequate. We decided not to be obsessed in the number of artists and areas any more. Rather, we focused to understand cultural diversity. We invited performance artists, alternative space directors, curators or the artists from relatively less known to Korean audience such as Mongolia and India. This turn led to help to broaden our horizons and make Korean Art world accessible to their countries on the other hand.
The relationships between Bae and its residency artists are not over after the program ended. Bae has continuously been promoting their potentials and visions. Over 30 artists applied for "2011 Open to you!". Kim Manseok, art critic, and Kim Seongyeon, Artist/Director of Alternative Space Bandee, evaluated their application materials and selected 5 candidates of them on April 25. The staffs of Bae didn't involve in the process of selection to ensure fairness. In 2nd evaluation, the juries Hwang Seokgwon (reporter of Monthly Art magazine), Heo Soobin (2008 artist), and Kim Daehong (Program director) interviewed candidates during 1 night and 2 days workshop. Jeon Heekyung (painting), In Jinmi (Movie), and Ha Wonsik (Video) are selected as the final choice.
For foreign artists, the juries selected Marcuz Wernli Saito who has social intervention, transnational artists group JAK (Jeong Jangyoung, Andreas geisselhard, Kestutis svirnelis), and the artists recommended by our partner institutions like Kuandu Museum of Fine Art in Taiwan, Ox warehouse in Macau.
Evaluation is based on their knowledge of the activity of Bae, the purpose of participants, and the suitability of their vision with Bae's vision. We exclude the applicants who apply for every residency program without considering their own characteristics. We put high value on the applicants who appealed his/her interest and future possibility to involve in our activities. The juries ruled out the applications which were vague and uncertain like "have a plan for solo exhibition near future" or "want to focus on own work some time being" since their purpose are irrelevant to Bae's vision.
Some artists apply for it even he/she has already been selected in other residency program. We don't allow the participation to be overlapped with other residency. We request all the participants to spend his/her time and energy in full during his/her residency in Bae. We don't want those who change the residency studio from place to place only for his career while they are absent from the very studios.
There are a few interesting applicants which suggested promising visions among the unselected. Though they are not selected for the finals because of the difference of vision and the lack of necessity to do the project here in Bae, we are sure that the artists can find the proper institutions in order to realize their vision in a near future.

Open to you is still developing in various ways. We are aware of not being just the means to career-up of the artists full of inordinate ambition. Though we can't say our programs do well to all participants and the local art scene, though we should renovate our system continuously, we are trying to look back on ourselves.

Somebody says that 'Open to you!' is too high for them. Somebody says that its facilities are too humble to stay for them. Well, we would like to say, if you want to need a good companion who can share your feeling and strong will for art, just take a rest here near the pear trees. Then, you could enjoy the pleasant tension with encounter with them.
