2011 Open to You, 5 Korean and 6 Foreign Artists will make a new networking here in Bae.
This is the first program of ‘2011 Open to You’ ,the Intro-Workshop, 4 Korean and 2 foreign artists have begun their own projects already. Here are the unique luggage which are filled with artworks and slightly strained hearts. We are looking forward to meet you who would like to join with us in this active movement.

2011 오픈투유는 한국 5명과 국외 작가 5개국 6명 총 11명의 다국적 작가들이 낮설고 특별한 곳에서 그들만의 네트워크를 시도하며 올해의 항해를 오픈스페이스 배와 함께 한 배를 타고 출항합니다.
그 첫 번째 공식 행사로 을 4명의 한국작가와 2명의 국외작가가 살짝 긴장된 기분으로 작업 봇다리를 풀어 여러분과 함께 하고자 합니다. 역동적인 현장에서 여러분의 관심을 기다리고 있겠습니다.
국내외를 불문하고 레지던스 프로그램 운영이 하나의 커다란 흐름으로 자리잡은 것이 꽤 오래된듯 하다. 정확히 세어보지는 않았지만 세계각국 각처에서 다양한 성격의 레지던스 프로그램이 온오프라인 상에서 쏟아지니 말이다. 외국의 경우 뿐 아니라 한국도 이러한 흐름에서 예외가 아니여서 수 많은 레지던스 프로그램들이 운영되고 또 지금도 생겨나고 있다.

오픈스페이스 배의 국제 레지던스 프로그램 “오픈 투 유'는 올해로 그 여섯번째 입주 작가를 맞이했다. 4월 공모를 통해 선발된 5명의 한국 작가와 스위스, 대만, 마카오, 독일, 리투아니아 출신의 6명의 외국 작가와 함께 2011년의 항해를 하려한다. 먼저 승선한 4명의 한국 작가-인진미(영화), 하원식(미디어, 설치), 한석경(평면), 전희경(평면)-와 2명의 외국작가-마르쿠즈 베른리 사이토(퍼포먼스,  공공개입), 왕테유(설치)-는 짧고 조용한 적응기간을 보내고 이번 인트로 워크숍을 준비하였다.

인트로 워크숍은 갓 입주한 작가의 설레임과 그들의 작업, 그리고 앞으로의 거주기간동안 진행될 프로젝트에 관한 이야기를 공식적이나 그리 무겁지 않게 풀어내는 자리다. 그들이 몰두했던 작업과 여기 배밭에서 벌릴 일들에 대한 구상을 나눔으로써 ‘2011 오픈 투 유'의 가능성을 상상하고 또 여러 반영될 의견들을 만나려 한다.

오픈스페이스 배의 레지던스 프로그램은 창작자에게 공간의 제공이라는 목적이 그 주된 목적만은 아니다. 작가와 작가와의 만남에서 오는 폭넓은 네트워크의 가능성 그리고 도시와 다른 자연속 생활이라는 환경적 특성에서 나오는 현장성이라는 것에 주목하고 있다. 대다수의 레지던스 프로그램이 자신의 존재를 바깥으로 드러내도록 도와주는 하나의 등용문으로 인식되는 것에 대한 문제 의식도 다분히 있지만 더 중요한 것은 단기적 성과물이 아닌 장기적으로 참여한 작가들이 스스로 국내외로 나아갈 수 있는 폭을 넓힐 수 있는 방법을 찾고 다문화적 융화(multy culture)의 계기를 마련코자 함이다.

올해도 예년과 마찬가지로 지역과 지역을 연결하는 무빙 테이블, 오픈스튜디오, 기획전시, 지역민과 함께 하는 교육 프로그램, 교환 프로그램 등여러가지 세세한 프로그램이 입주 작가들을 기다리고 있다. 부디 입주기간 동안 개별 존재를 뛰어 넘는 협업과 연대의 과정을 통해 작가로서의 사회적 역할을 서로 이해하고 존중하고 배우는 소중한 항해를 경험하기를 기대한다. 한 배를 탔다는 것은 아무리 강조해도 부족하지 않는, 다시없는 귀한 경험이 될 것이다. 열린 공간 ‘배(bae)’가 같은 한 척의 ‘배(ship)’를 타고 열정과 결실이 두 ‘배(double)’가 된다는 것이니 이 얼마나 거룩한 일인가!

부산에 속하면서도 부산 도심의 바깥, 그 심오한 경계를 상징하는 이 곳 배 밭에 몰려든 국내 외의 열혈 젊은이들의 이야기가 드디어 전국의 미술작가들과 미술 관계자, 일반 애호가들 앞에 펼쳐지는 날은 바로 2011년 6월 18일 오후이다. 자신이 어디로부터 왔으며, 왜 여기까지 오게 되었는지를 작품과 사고를 통해 발언하고 소통하면서 그들은 그푸름이 눈시린 6월의 푸른 밤을 기꺼이 지새울 작정이다. 아무쪼록 그들을 환영하고 작가로서의 행보에 드문 경험을 안겨줄 수 있도록 많은 질책과 격려를 가져 오시길 소망해본다.

The artist-in-residence program provides a crucial possibility to create contemporary art scene.  In general, the residential program offers not only a studio space to work on a project but also a debut stage to be a professional artist.  There are already many local governments to support the non-profit artist-in-residence programs.  I take a pride in running on the residential program in the city of Busan.

It has been six years since Openspace Bae founded in 2004.  The atmosphere of Openspace Bae is alive with experimental ideas and determinations of new comers. In April, the committee of Openspace Bae had already selected artists who will stay in this year.  It was started from four Korean artists in May and more international artists will come and join this unique experience. There are many programs planed for the residential artists such as an Open studio, an exhibition, a public art project, workshops, an exchange program ‘Moving Table’. Moreover, Openspace Bae does not just provide studios and exhibitions for artists but also it aims to support the necessity of public communication.

Throughout the Openspace Bae’s exchange program, Korean artists are going to be introduced to the other countries, too.  The exchange program is a good evidence of globalized art world.   I expect the collaboration of artists so that they can contribute with each other.  It is a memorable experience to be a part of family as we are boarding on the same ship (Bae means a pear, double and a ship in Korean).  What a great experience to be a part of the Openspace Bae’s family!

Located in the outskirts of Busan, Openspace Bae is surrounded by passionate artists, critics and museum people on the night of June 18, 2011.  The people will discuss about their art works and the idea of others for all night.  I hope that the audiences will give a lot of criticism as well as encouragements for the resident artists.
