2009 International Artist-in-residence, Open to You
– Blissful Encounter

By Kim Dae-Hong, Program Manager

Openspace Bae is an alternative art space located in Ilkwang; that is, a pear field in Ilkwang, on a slope of Mt. Ilkwang, far from downtown Busan. It is encircled with the serenity of natural surroundings lost in urban life. The reason we feel Openspace Bae is located in an unfamiliar space is we have become used to artificiality, and thus perceive artificiality, and civilization, as natural. Its anti-civilization aspects, such as insects, hot weather, and an inconvenient water supply make its resident artists learn how to live with nature; or force them to live in an uncivilized manner. They probably decided to accept such an environment, but later discovered it was not easy. But they naturally came to adapt themselves to nature. I am still witnessing their daily activities, and the replacement of their urban life styles with tanned skin and rough garments.

Interestingly, artists from many countries have flocked here, a place even many Koreans are unfamiliar with. We can assume, when people with different physiologies and diverse propensities gather in the wilderness of Mt. Ilkwang, many incidents might be raised. Even brothers born from the same mother might find the scene difficult, if they stay together for a long time. Living together with unfamiliar people is perhaps thus a sufficient condition to bring about many interesting complications.

Openspace Bae has run artist-in-residence programs for several years. It has put more significance on the exchange of life experiences than on the production of artworks. This means, through such programs, artists can obverse each others’ work, and feel share their energy through the skin. Other institutions often disregard such friendly exchanges, by focusing on visible, superficial accomplishments – which even Openspace Bae cannot completely avoid. However, it is obvious through its residency programs, which requires patience, careful consideration, and great effort, Openspace Bae has never ceased endeavors to maintain and pursue its objectives. This program is positive in that it seeks democratic ways of fusing a variety of life conditions that can enhance life.

Openspace Bae’s 2009 residence program occurs in the first half and second half of the year. Jeon Joon-Young (Gangwon-do), Hong Won-Seok (Daejeon), Jang Yoon-Sun (Daegu), and Son Mong-Joo (Busan) entered during the first half. They endured the rough conditions, and finally assimilated with nature! Succeeding them were artists including Ilke Ilmaz (Turkey), Natalie Lafortune (Canada), Frank Leiv(Macao), Robert Estermann (Switzerland). Some left earlier than expected, due to certain conditions and their hectic schedule. Participating artists from overseas during the first half of the year were all based and active in Europe. They were all active in communicating with the public, taking part in many programs. 일케 and 나탈리 had a joint exhibition, Into the Woods at Bae’s space, to widely promote their art in Korea. 프랭크 also had an event to introduce the Ox Warehouse he runs at Alternative Space Bandee in Busan.

Chen, Ching Yao

In addition to artists who experienced Bae’s residency programs, short-term artists, Kim Soon-Im (Busan), Kang Min-Soo (Seoul), and Lee Ka-Young (Busan) joined later and presented their work at Bandee under the title The Moving Shoreline. As part of an exchange program with other regions, they stayed in Seogwipo, Jeju for four days and had an opportunity to converse with the district’s artists and activists. They also took part in joint exhibitions with Jeju artists at Gallery Haru, an alternative space located in Seogwipo, and decided to execute a regular international exchange program with the Ox Warehouse in Macao.

In addition to these external events, workshops and each artist’s solo shows right after entering and right before leaving the residency regularly took place to stimulate understandings with each other. Each artist might feel these occasions were more meaningful than external events. In the duet show Into the Woods, Ilke and Natalie introduced their work, and Frank presented his work in the front yard of Space Bae, and also showed the photos he took in Korea to his colleagues. Robert made public the results of his persistent work during the residence period, and also showed the photographs of impressive scenes he took in Korea, as Frank did.

Artists such as Chen Guang (China), Chinami Ooki (Japan), Ching Yao (Taiwan), and Alice Kok (Macao) joined in the later half of the year, bringing yet another atmosphere.

Open to You is an open space event to publicize the activities of each participating artist. This event has been mounted every autumn at Openspace Bae. Unlike previous years however, this year’s will be special as artists from overseas will attend. Through this event, we may experience traces of past, present, and future from upcoming artists. This occasion could spice up the tedium of everyday life through an experience of many artists’ studios - hard to find usually; their profound world; and the work processes of artists from overseas. Don’t miss this opportunity to have a fantastic encounter!
