삶 속에서 맺게 되는 '관계'. 눈에 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것들, 공간과 사람, 물질과 비물질……. 이 모든 것은 시간 속에서 '관계하다'라는 행위로 연을 맺게 된다. 손에 꼽기도 어려울 정도로 많은 것이 얽히고 설키어 관계함을 인지하고, 그러하기에 잃고 잊음에도 의미가 있음에 관하여 보여주고자 했다. 

이는 작품과 장소의 특정한 상호작용을 통해 의미를 생성시키는 미술행위인 '장소특정적 미술 site-specific art'이라고 할 수 있을 것이며, 시각적 표현은 앙리 르페브르 Lefèbvre, Henri의 '걷는다는 것은 곧 쓴다는 것 To walk is to write.' 이라는 말에서 착안을 하여 진행방식을 선택하였다. 특정한 지역을 선택하여 머무르고 생활하면서 지역과의 친밀도를 높인 후, 일정한 시간, 일정한 길을 반복해서 걸으며 물질들을 모으는 것이다. 

쉬는 느낌으로 쉼없이 걷는다. 한때 숨을 쉬던, 빛이 있던, 바람에 구르던, 스스로 움직이던, 그리고 우리의 온기가 스며있던 물질들이 발길이 닿는 곳곳에 흩어져있다. 서울 연남동 천공장에서 재단하고 난 후에 버린 쓰레기봉투, 강원도 양구 박수근 생가 주변에서 발생된 유기물들, 제주도 삼달리 귤밭 근처에 버려진 것들, 부산 기장에 인공적인 해수욕장을 만들기 위해 6년째 4대강 사업 지역에서 포크레인으로 쓸어온 모래들……. 인간의 편의를 위해 자연을 해치던 물질들은 또 다른 물질로 인간에게 되돌아와서 하나의 시간적 관계의 증거물이 되어주고 숨겨진 이야기들을 들려주었다.

Relations in life can be between the visible and the invisible, space and humans, and the material and the immaterial. All these kind of things are entangled with each other. I intend to acknowledge that we enter into uncountable relations entwined with each other, highlighting the significance of lost and forgotten relations.

I regard my work as a ‘site-specific art’ which meaning is generated through interactions between the artist and the space. Referring to Henri Lefèbvre’s statement that “to work is to write”, I devise a method to create the work, which is to live in a specific place, to get familiar with the place, walk in the same path at a certain time, and collect objects from there.

I try to ceaselessly walk but feel like resting. What I encounter with are a range of materials which breathe, radiate light, sway in the wind, or are abandoned. I collected a rubbish heap from a fabric plant at Yeonnam-dong in Seoul, discarded things from the house of Korean painter Park Soo-Keun’s birth at Yanggu-gun in in Gangwon-do and near an orange grove at Samdal-ri in Jeju Island, grains of sand taken from four rivers with the aim of building an artificial beach at Gijang in Busan. These objects are visual testimonies to disclose the past hidden or forgotten histories.

이번에는 부산광역시 기장군 일광면 297-1번지 ‘오픈스페이스 배’가 있는 배밭이다. 2년 전 이곳에서 직접 머물고 생활하였기 때문에 당시의 경험은 지리적 및 생활적 문제를 쉽게 해결할 수 있게 해주었으며, 그 때 당시 오픈스페이스 배에 관한 10여 년 동안의 역사를 어깨 너머로 보고 귀동냥으로 듣게 되면서 세세한 부분까지 알게 되었다. ‘지역에서 물리적 시간을 들여서 머물 것’을 작업 진행 방식으로 갖고 있기 때문에, 이번 전시를 준비하면서 3차례 방문, 거주하며 작업을 진행하였는데, 이는 익숙한 것을 낯설게 바라볼 수 있는 계기가 됨으로써 새롭게 축적된 시간들을 만들어냈다.

여타의 지역과 다른 생물들, 필수불가결하게 발생된 유기물들과 같은 것들로부터 배밭과의 관계성 및 지역적 특수성을 살펴보고, 이런 데이터베이스를 근거하여 조사, 수집, 세척, 건조, 변형의 단계를 거치게 된 수집물들을 시각적으로 구현함으로써 배밭의 이야기들을 읽어내려 하였다.

This time, I worked in a pear grove where Openspace Bae (297-1samseong-ri, ilgwang-myeon, gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea) is located. Since as an artist-in-residence I used to live in this place two years ago, the past experience helped me easily get acquainted with the place. For the creation of the new work, I have visited the grove three times, which gave me new insights on the place and generate the new relation between myself and the space.

In exploring the pear grove and its unique aspects in relation to other areas closed to the grove, organisms abounding in the grove, any kinds of discarded things, I visualized a range of objects, which were collected from the grove, cleansed, dried, and transformed, so as to unveil the story of the pear grove.
