ARTIST STATEMENT:

다시마 기르기
이번 예술적 연구의 중심은 부산 기장군의 비옥한 연안 해역에서 다시마를 기르시는 분들의 지역 상황에 직접적으로 참여하는 것입니다. 이 지역에서 널리 알려진 음식조미료 뒤에 숨은 기술과 사람들을 알기 위해서, 예술가는 이동리항의 다시마 공장에서 일주일간 견습생로서 작업을 하였습니다. 공동으로 작업하는 환경에서 함께 저녁을 먹거나 젖은 다시마 위에서 미끄러지는 등 일상의 즐거움과 어려움을 나누면서, 동료 예술가들인 한석경, 전희경과 김대홍은 마르쿠스가 다시마 문화의 중심에 있는 사람들로부터 통찰력과 이야기를 모으는 것을 도와주었습니다. 다시마 작업을 하시는 분들에게서 얻은 지식은 마르쿠스가 지역의 아이들이 다시마를 가지고 재미있게 만들 수 있는 ‘다시마 연구실’을 설립하도록 이끌었습니다.
 
오픈스페이스 배에서의 설치는 이동리항에서 일하시는 분들에게서 모은 이야기를 가지고 다시마 조각의 모양으로 보여줍니다. 다시마는 빠르고 무성하게 자라서 이것을 기르는 일은 어떤 작물을 경작할 땅이나 물을 끌어들이거나 인조비료를 필요로 하지 않습니다. 그렇기 때문에 예술가가 음식으로서가 아닌 조각적인 재료로서 식용해초를 이용하게 된 것입니다. 게다가 멋진 퇴비로도 변하니까요. 신선하고 수분을 함유한 다시마는 육감적이면서도 만지기가 꺼려집니다. 다시마는 다루기 힘들어서 자연스럽게 모양이 만들어지는 아름다움이 있는데, 예술가와 유기물 간의 공동창작으로 결과를 예상할 수 없이 만들어지면서 완전히 조절할 수 없게끔 말려집니다. 운 좋게도 마르쿠스는 젖은 다시마가 빛에 민감한 도구라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 다시-그라프(‘그라프’는 옛날 그리스어로 ‘기록하다’라는 뜻)라고 부르는데, 사물들을 이 위에 올려놓고 태양빛에 노출시키면, 다시마는 단조롭게 인화된 사진처럼 그 위에 덮여 있던 사물의 형체를 알아낼 수 있습니다.
 
다시마 기르기는 기장군에 있는 이동리의 다시마 제조업자들께서 기꺼이 지원해주신 덕에 가능했습니다. 2011 오픈 투 유의 동료 입주 작가들과 오픈스페이스 배의 디렉터 팀, 마지막으로 2011 부산 예술 캠프의 참가 어린이들에게도 감사함을 전합니다.

GROWING DASHIMA

At the heart of this artistic research is the direct engagement with the local situation: Local people harvesting Dashima at the fertile, coastal waters of Gijang-gun (Busan). In order to get to know the people and craft behind this food condiment - the region is known for - the artist worked as an apprentice for one week at the Dashima manufactory in Idong-ri harbor. While sharing the daily joys (eating dinner together) and troubles (slipping on wet Dashima) in this collective work setting, the fellow artists SeokKyoun Han, HeeKyoung Jeon and DaeHong Kim helped Markuz to collect insights and stories from the people who make Dashima culture possible. This insider's knowledge allowed Markuz to establish a "Dashima Laboratory" which was also open to local children to craft and have fun with Dashima.

The installation at OpenSpace Bae takes the stories collected from the workers at Itong-ri harbor and displays them in the form of Dashima sculptures. Because Dashima grows fast and abundantly (up to 10 cm per day) and can be farmed with minimal resource input the artist explored ways to utilize this sea vegetable as material for making objects. Dashima is both sensual and repellent but the beauty (rewarding challenge) of sculpting with Dashima is that it has "a mind of its own": It dries in ways that can not be fully controlled, making the result unpredictable and a co-creation between the artist and organic matter. Through a happy accident Markuz discovered that wet Dashima is a light-sensitive medium (called "Dashigraph"): Overlain with objects on top of it and exposed to sunlight Dashima is able to trace objects overlain on top like a monotone, photographic print.
